Best for: Souvenirs and rattan bags — arrive 8–9am before tour buses, expect to bargain to a third of the asking price.

Pasar Gianyar Night Market

Best for: Last-minute gifts within walking distance of the beach clubs.

Best for: Bulk cheap souvenirs and beach clothing.

Kuta's art market is souvenir-focused; Pasar Badung is Bali's biggest traditional market — four floors of produce, spices, textiles and temple offerings.

Hours: Kuta 9am–9pm daily; Pasar Badung 24 hours, main trade 4am–2pm

Best days: Pasar Badung is best Mon–Sat; Sunday trade is thinner

Peak hours: Pasar Badung heaves 6–9am — go 5–6am for the freshest stock, or 10am for space

Best for: Pasar Badung for real local prices on fruit, spices and fabric.

Canggu: Love Anchor & Samadi Sunday Market

Sanur: Sindhu Night Market & Sanur Art Market

Sindhu is a low-key local food market — nasi campur, sate, grilled fish; the art market along the beach path sells sarongs and paintings.

Hours: Sindhu night market 5pm–11pm daily; art market 8am–7pm

Best days: Any evening; weekends bring more warung stalls

Peak hours: Food stalls busiest 6.30–8.30pm; popular dishes sell out by 9pm

Best for: Family-friendly cheap dinner without the tourist mark-up.

Jimbaran Fish Market (Kedonganan)

Wet market of snapper, prawns, squid and lobster straight off the boats. Nearby warungs will grill whatever you buy.

Hours: From about 5am, winding down by 10am; smaller evening trade 4–7pm

Best days: Daily, though catch is thinnest after rough seas or a full moon

Peak hours: Boats land and prices are best 6–8am; by 9am the good fish is gone

Best for: Buying seafood to be cooked on the spot — check ice and clear eyes, bargain by the kilo.

Sukawati Art Market

The wholesale source for most souvenirs on the island — paintings, sarongs, wind chimes, baskets and carvings, sold cheap in quantity.

Hours: 6am–6pm, daily (many stalls shut by 5pm)

Best days: Mon–Fri for wholesale attention; weekends are tour-bus heavy

Peak hours: Quietest 7–9am, busiest 11am–2pm — early sellers often give a better first price

Best for: Buying in bulk at close to trade prices.

Bring cash in IDR 10k–50k notes; almost no stall takes cards and change is often short.
Bargaining is normal in art and souvenir markets: counter at about 30–40% of the first price and settle near half.
Produce markets (pasar) do not bargain much — prices for locals are already low, so pay what is asked and go early.
Fresh markets peak 4–8am; art markets run 8am–6pm; night markets start around 5pm and are best 6–9pm.
Watch your bag in crowded aisles and avoid carrying a visible phone while walking the narrow lanes.
Ask before photographing sellers or offerings, and never step over a canang placed on the ground.

How shopping works here

Malls are fixed price and card-friendly; markets and small shops are cash and negotiable. Carry both.
Foreign card payments often add a 2–3% surcharge in malls — some shops still ask for cash above IDR 1m.
Imported items are taxed heavily: cheese, wine, chocolate and cereal cost two to three times UK/AU prices.
Supermarkets in tourist areas price higher than the same chain in Denpasar. If you live here, do the big shop inland.
Alcohol is sold in supermarkets and dedicated shops, but not at all mini-marts; prices are lowest at Grand Lucky and Bintang.
Most malls open 10am–10pm; supermarkets 7am/8am to 10pm/11pm; pasar closes by mid-morning.
Parking is IDR 2k–5k for a scooter and IDR 5k–10k for a car, paid in cash at the exit.
