Visas & health checks
Which Indonesian visa fits your trip, what each one actually allows you to do, and why long-stay permits ask you for a medical check.

Start here: how long and why
Pick by purpose, not by price. Overstaying is fined at IDR 1,000,000 per day on departure, and a conversion inside Indonesia is rarely possible.
Holiday up to 60 days
VOAe-VOA before you fly, then one 30-day extension online. Simplest and cheapest route.
Two to six months
B211AVisit visa through an agent, extended twice. Good for surf seasons, family visits and scouting.
Living here, foreign income
E33G / E33FRemote worker KITAS if you have a foreign contract, Second Home visa if you are self-funded.
Working or investing locally
KITASWork or investor KITAS with a company sponsor. Only these let you earn inside Indonesia.
Every visa type, plainly
Visa on Arrival (B1 / VOA)
30 + 30 daysHolidays up to 60 days total.
- IDR 500,000 paid at the airport counter or online as e-VOA before you fly.
- Extendable once for another 30 days — apply 7–14 days before it expires.
- Passport must be valid 6+ months with a return or onward ticket.
- No work of any kind, including remote work for a foreign employer in theory.
e-VOA (online VOA)
Fastest arrivalAnyone who wants to skip the payment queue.
- Apply at evisa.imigrasi.go.id a few days before departure; you get a QR by email.
- Extension is done online from the same account — no immigration office visit for the first extension in most cases.
- Save the QR offline; airport wifi is unreliable at 2am.
Visa-free entry (ASEAN + a few others)

- Free, 30 days, cannot be extended or converted.
- Everyone else should take the VOA even if a website says otherwise.

1 yearEmployed by or contracting to a company outside Indonesia.
- Requires proof of USD 60,000 annual income, 12 months of bank statements and a foreign employment contract.

- Work KITAS needs a company sponsor, RPTKA approval and a DKP-TKA levy of USD 100 per month.
- Investor KITAS needs a minimum shareholding in a PT PMA (typically IDR 1bn+) and allows no salaried role.
- Both convert to a KITAP after several consecutive years.
Retirement KITAS (C319)
1 year, renewableAge 60+ with pension income.
- Needs proof of pension (commonly USD 1,500+/month), rented accommodation and local health insurance.
- You must employ an Indonesian domestic helper as part of the conditions.
Second Home visa (E33F)
5 or 10 yearsSelf-funded long stays with no work requirement.
- Requires proof of funds of IDR 2bn (about USD 130,000) held in a state bank, or ownership of qualifying property.
- No sponsor needed and no local employment allowed.
Why you need a health check
Any permit that makes you a resident rather than a visitor (all KITAS types, KITAP and some Second Home applications) requires a medical certificate. Short-stay VOA and B211A do not.
The reasons behind it
- Immigration screens residents for communicable disease — chiefly tuberculosis, hepatitis B and C, HIV and syphilis — before granting a stay permit.
- A drug screen is standard: Indonesia treats narcotics offences extremely seriously, and a positive result ends the application.
- The certificate also confirms you are fit to work if the permit is a work KITAS, and supports the insurance requirement on retirement permits.
- Some sponsors and schools ask for the same certificate separately, so keep scanned copies.
How to do the medical check in Bali
Budget half a day and IDR 500,000–1,500,000 depending on the clinic and how many tests your permit needs.
1. Book the right test package
Step 1Tell the clinic it is for a KITAS or stay permit (surat keterangan sehat untuk KITAS) so they issue the correct stamped certificate rather than a generic fitness note.
2. Where to go
Step 2- BIMC Kuta and BIMC Nusa Dua — English-speaking, fast turnaround, most expensive.
- Siloam Hospitals Sunset Road and Kasih Ibu Denpasar — full lab on site, mid price.
- Puskesmas (government community clinic) in your kecamatan — cheapest, mostly Indonesian-speaking, often what agents use.
3. What happens on the day
Step 3- Height, weight, blood pressure and a short doctor consultation.
- Blood draw for infectious-disease screening and a urine sample for the drug test.
- Chest X-ray for tuberculosis on most work and retirement permits.
- Fasting is usually not required unless the package includes blood sugar or cholesterol.
4. Paperwork to bring
Step 4- Passport plus a photocopy of the photo page and current visa.
- Two or four 4x6 red-background photos — bring extras, immigration asks again later.
- Your sponsor letter or agent reference number if you have one.
- Cash or card; some Puskesmas are cash only.
Results take one to three working days and the certificate is typically valid for only 14–30 days, so do the check after your sponsor confirms the application, not before. Declare any regular medication at the consultation — codeine, ADHD stimulants and strong sleeping pills are controlled here and need a doctor's letter.
Rules that catch people out
- Overstay is IDR 1,000,000 per day and over 60 days can mean detention and a re-entry ban.
- A VOA cannot be converted to a KITAS inside Indonesia — you leave, apply, and come back on the new visa.
- Extensions need you to be in Indonesia and usually one in-person visit for photo and fingerprints.
- Passports need six months validity from arrival, and at least one blank page.
- Agents are normal here, but only pay a registered agency with an office and a receipt, and never hand over your original passport without one.
- Rules change often — confirm current fees on the official immigration site before you pay anyone.
