How to actually get around Bali — what each option costs, when to use it, and the licence and safety rules that catch visitors out.

Your options, and what they cost

Grab & Gojek (app rides)

Cheapest

Both apps do cars, bikes, food and parcels. Cars in Canggu/Seminyak run IDR 30k–90k for most hops. Some areas (Ubud centre, parts of Canggu, Uluwatu beaches) have local transport 'mafia' zones where drivers cannot pick up — walk a block to the main road and it usually resolves.

Private driver for the day

IDR 600k–900k

8–10 hours with fuel, air-con and a driver who waits at each stop. The best value for east/north Bali day trips. Book by WhatsApp the day before and agree the route and price up front. Tip IDR 50k–100k if it went well.

Scooter rental

IDR 70k–100k/day

Monthly rates fall to IDR 800k–1.2m. Check brakes, tyres, lights and the STNK (registration) is in the seat before you leave. Photograph existing scratches. Never hand over your passport as deposit — a copy plus a cash deposit is normal.

Car rental

IDR 350k–600k/day

Self-drive is only worth it for families or Ubud/east-coast bases. Traffic and parking in Canggu and Kuta are brutal. A car with a driver often costs less than the fuel-plus-stress of driving yourself.

Airport transfer

IDR 150k–500k

Pre-booked transfers meet you at arrivals with a name board. Official airport taxis are metered but pricier; Grab/Gojek pick up from the designated app-ride area on the departures level or the far end of arrivals.

Fast boats & flights

Island hopping

Nusa Penida and Lembongan run from Sanur (30–45 min, IDR 175k–400k each way). Gili Islands go from Padang Bai or Serangan (2–2.5 hrs). Book morning crossings — afternoon swell gets rough.

Grab & Gojek for daily use

Install both before you land. Between them they cover almost every ride, meal and parcel you will need day to day.

Widest coverage

GrabCar, GrabBike, GrabFood and GrabExpress in one app. Best car availability in Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur and Denpasar. Pay by card, GrabPay wallet or cash — set cash before you order if you have no local wallet. Fares are fixed at booking, so traffic delays do not cost you more.

Gojek

Best for bikes & food

GoRide (scooter), GoCar, GoFood, GoSend. Usually a few thousand rupiah cheaper than Grab and quicker to find a bike in Ubud and Denpasar. GoPay top-ups at Alfamart/Indomaret counters if your foreign card is rejected.

Know the difference

GrabBike/GoRide is a pillion seat on a scooter: IDR 10k–30k for most short hops, unbeatable in traffic, and the driver brings a spare helmet — wear it. Cars cost roughly 3x but make sense with luggage, kids, rain or a group.

What to expect

Short hop within Canggu or Seminyak IDR 20k–45k by car. Canggu to Seminyak IDR 60k–90k. Seminyak to Ubud IDR 200k–300k. Bikes are roughly a third of the car price on the same route.

Transport 'mafia' zones

Very common

In parts of Ubud centre, Canggu, Uluwatu and around markets, local transport groups block app drivers from picking up. Your driver may ask you to walk to the main road or cancel. It is not a scam — walk one block out and reorder.

Save yourself grief

Save your villa as a pin, not an address — many lanes have no numbers. Keep the driver's WhatsApp chat open, share your live location, and keep small notes for cash rides as drivers rarely carry change.

Taxis and street rides

When there is no signal, no driver nearby, or you just want to flag something down.

Blue Bird

Only taxi to flag

Light blue, bird logo on the roof, meter (argo) starts around IDR 7k then roughly IDR 7k per km. Insist on the meter and refuse a fixed price. Book in the MyBluebird app to avoid impostors.

Fake Blue Birds

Watch out

Similar blue cars with near-identical logos ('Blue Bird Group' misspellings, wrong bird shape) park outside clubs and malls. Check the driver ID card on the dash and that the meter is running before you move.

Street taxis and touts

Negotiate first

Any 'transport?' offer on the street is unmetered. Agree the full price out loud before getting in, and use an app fare estimate as your benchmark. Expect to pay 30–50% more than the app for the convenience.

Fixed zones

The official airport counter sells fixed-price coupons by zone — pricier than an app, but hassle-free at 2am. Grab and Gojek pick up from the designated ride-app area, not the arrivals kerb.

Helmets — non-negotiable

The one rule to take away from this page.

Always wear a helmet — rider and passenger, every single trip

Head injuries from scooter crashes are the number one cause of serious injury and death among visitors to Bali. It does not matter that the ride is two minutes down the lane, that no one else is wearing one, or that it is a GrabBike. Put the helmet on and fasten the strap — an unclipped helmet comes off on impact and does nothing.

Helmets are legally mandatory for rider and passenger. Riding without one is an instant fine of IDR 250k–500k.
Rental helmets are often cracked, loose or dry-rotted. Buy your own for IDR 250k–500k if you are staying more than a couple of weeks.
Check the strap holds firm and the shell has no cracks. A helmet that rocks on your head is not protecting it.
Grab and Gojek bike drivers carry a spare helmet — ask for it and use it, every time.
Children need a properly fitted child helmet, not an adult one perched on top.
No helmet also gives insurers a clean reason to reject a medical claim, even if the crash was not your fault.

Scooter hire: licences, insurance and fines

Read this before you rent anything with two wheels. The rental shop will not tell you any of it.

Ride legally or you ride uninsured

You legally need an International Driving Permit endorsed for motorcycles (category A) plus your home licence. A car-only IDP does not cover a scooter.
Riding without the right licence makes almost every travel insurance policy void — this is the single biggest cause of unpaid Bali hospital bills, and evacuation home can run into six figures.
Many policies also exclude bikes over 125cc, riding with a passenger, or any alcohol in your system — read the motorcycle clause before you rent.
Rental shops will happily rent you a bike with no licence at all. That is their risk appetite, not legal permission, and it does not protect you.
Long-stayers can convert to an Indonesian SIM C at the Denpasar police office (Polresta) with a KITAS.
Police checkpoints are routine, especially in Kuta, Canggu and Ubud. Carry the licence, IDP, and the bike's STNK registration document.
On-the-spot fines are typically IDR 250k–500k. Ask for the official ticket (tilang) — a receipt means it was a real fine.
Check brakes, tyres, lights, horn and the STNK before you ride off, and photograph every existing scratch so you are not billed for it later.
Never leave your passport as a deposit. A photocopy plus a cash deposit is the normal arrangement.
Ride on the left, expect traffic from every direction, and avoid your first rides at night or in rain.

The insurance maths: a week of scooter hire saves you maybe IDR 500k over using apps. An uninsured air ambulance home costs USD 40,000–100,000. If you do not hold a motorcycle-endorsed IDP, use Grab and Gojek — it is the cheaper decision.
